Idea Cellular spurts after strong Q4 outcome

Idea Cellular jumped 8.04% to Rs 125.60 at 10:46 IST on BSE after consolidated net profit rose 28.95% to Rs 308.18 crore on 12.88% rise in total income to Rs 6061.38 crore in Q4 March 2013 over Q4 March 2012.

The result was announced after market hours on Thursday, 25 April 2013.

Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex was down 73.41 points, or 0.38%, to 19,333.44.

On BSE, 11.61 lakh shares were traded in the counter as against an average daily volume of 4.83 lakh shares in the past one quarter.

The stock hit a high of Rs 128.70 so far during the day, which is also a 52-week high for the counter. The stock hit a low of Rs 121 so far during the day. The stock had hit a 52-week low of Rs 72.05 on 9 August 2012.

 

The stock had outperformed the market over the past one month till 25 April 2013, rising 7.09% compared with the Sensex's 3.88% rise. The scrip had also outperformed the market in past one quarter, rising 2.51% as against Sensex's 3.47% fall.

The large-cap company has an equity capital of Rs 3314.32 crore. Face value per share is Rs 10.

Idea Cellular's consolidated net profit rose 34.82% to Rs 308.18 crore on 8.66% rise in total revenue to Rs 6061.38 crore in Q4 March 2013 over Q3 December 2012.

Idea Cellular, returned strongly to its upwards revenue trajectory, with 8.6% sequential quarterly growth in Q4 March 2013 on the back of 5% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) growth in Q3 December 2012.

Idea said the high revenue growth was led by sharp expansion of voice minutes at 8.5% to 143.4 billion, on sequential quarterly basis, indicating consumer demand for mobile telephony is robust. The visitor location register (VLR) growth is back, with company clocking 8.3 million incremental quarterly growth and delivering over 40% of industry incremental VLR in first 11 months of the year ended March 2013 (as per TRAI February 2013 report). Idea now serves 121.6 million quality customers. VLR is a temporary database of subscribers who have roamed into the particular area, which an operator serves.

Contrary to expectations, the average realised rate per minute (ARPM) was nearly flat at 41.2 paise (p) in Q4 March 2013 against 41.1p in Q3 December 2012. While the challenges on voice ARPM continue, the company improved non-voice revenue to 15.2% (14.6% in Q3 December 2012) led by data growth.

The Q4 March 2013 has the highest data adoption by Idea customers' with 4.5 million sequential quarter addition, as the EoP base of data users grew to 26.2 million, now contributing 6.6% to service revenue. The data volume expanded by 13.8% to 11.4 billion megabyte (MB) (10.0 billion MB in Q3 December 2012) and data realised rate improved by 9.5% to 33.9p per MB in Q4 March 2013 (31.0p in Q3 December 2012). The active 3G subscriber base for the company stands at 5.1 million, helping overall 2G+3G data revenue growth on sequential quarterly basis by 24.6% and data ARPU reaching to Rs 55.

On a standalone basis, the overall exponential revenue growth has translated into earnings before interest taxes depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of Rs 1503.70 crore, margin improvement by 1.2% to 24.7%, inspite of accounting for one-off regulatory charge of Rs 76 crore reflecting in license and WPC charges. Annual EBITDA has increased to Rs 5371.40 crore at 23.8% in the year ended March 2013 in comparison to Rs 4515.90 crore at 22.9% in the year ended March 2012.

On a standalone basis, the company generated healthy cash profit of Rs 4696.80 crore in the year ended March 2013, a growth of 30.2% over the year ended March 2012. After 16 years of start of operations, the board of Idea has recommended its maiden dividend at 3%, an overall payout of Rs 116.30 crore (including dividend distribution tax). Idea Cellular's standalone represents Idea, and its 100% subsidiaries. Effectively, this encompasses all operations, excluding the joint venture i.e. Indus.

Idea said it continues to strengthen its competitive standing by investing in long term value creators - launched 2,432 GSM sites and 1,595 3G sites, expanded optical fibre network to 74,000 kilometre and strengthened its presence in NLD, ILD, ISP, data services and smartphone device business. Idea is the biggest net gainer nationally in the mobile number portability program, a strong indicator of the popular appeal of Idea mobile services.

Idea said it is one of the few companies in the world, which is able to run high quality telecom services at the world's lowest price points and yet deliver stable cash profits. The improving capacity utilization, increasing brand popularity & quality of consumer service with a strong balance sheet underscores Idea's ability to benefit from long term sector opportunities, the company said.

Idea Cellular, part of the Aditya Birla Group, is the third largest wireless operator in India with a revenue market share of 14.8% (Q3 December 2012).
