Kharif Acreage Deficit Narrows

Kharif planting has recovered after an early setback. The latest data showed that the total acreage stood at 413.34 lakh hectares (lh) as on 12h July 2019, compared with 452.3 lh covered in the corresponding week last year. This is still indicating a shortfall though the deficit has narrowed significantly and stands at 8.61%. This stood at 27% in the last week.

Rice planting is down by nearly 11% to 98 lh as against 110 lh covered during the same period last year. However, area under pulses stood at 34.22 lh, compared with 45.73 lh covered in the same week last year - down around 25%. The total area under oilseeds cultivation stood at 75.68 lh, down around 10% than 83.78 lh achieved during the same week last year.

 

In coarse cereals, the total area is down by 6.6% to 71.17 lh as against 76.22 lh last year. Cotton acreage stood at 77.71 lh as compared 77.50 lh in the previous year- up marginally. sugarcane acreage is down modestly at 50 lh as compared to 52 lh planted last year.
