According to the kharif sowing data released by the Agriculture Ministry, plantings have covered nearly 1,010 lakh hectares (lh) on 30 August 2019, compared with 1,027 lh in the corresponding period last year, marking a drop of 1.72% as a recovery in acreage is recent weeks continued on a good showing by the monsoon. Rice is transplanted on 355 lh so far, as against 372 lh last year, down around 5% though. Acreage under oilseeds is 170.78 lh, down 0.22%. Area under soyabean is 112.7 lh, up 0.85%. In coarse cereals, the acreage stands at 171.74 lh, almost unchanged on year. Pulses area is at 127.99 lh, down 2.70%. Tur acreage is at 44.36 lh, down 0.14%. Sugarcane acreage is at 52.41 lh, down 5.52%. However, the area under cotton crop is around 125 lh, up nearly 6% over the year.
