Acreage under kharif crops stands at sowing to 689 lakh hectares (lh) up to 26th July 2019 compared to the same period in 2018-19, official data showed. This marked a decline of 6.44% on year. Rice planting is down by 6.35% to 185 lh while area under coarse cereals at present is 119 lh, down 8.86% over year. However, Maize acreage is up 2% at 63.84 lh. Kharif pulses area stands at 82.92 lh, down 18.58% with massive tumble in area under moong (down 24.71% at 20.48 lh). Total area under oilseeds stands at 133.66 lh, down 5.15%. Soybean area is at 97.14 lh, down 4.30%. Cotton continues to be the only major crop showing an increase in area with planting currently at 109 lh, up 6.27% compared to last year.
