Market may open slightly higher

Trading of CNX Nifty futures on the Singapore stock exchange indicates that the Nifty could gain 13.50 points at the opening bell. In overseas markets, Asian stocks were mixed today, 15 July 2015. US stocks rose yesterday, 14 July 2015.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 269.90 crore yesterday, 14 July 2015, as per provisional data released by the stock exchanges. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 130.90 crore yesterday, 14 July 2015, as per provisional data.

Among corporate news, Coal India said that Coal India Africana Limitada, a 100% subsidiary of Coal India (CIL) in Mozambique was allotted two leasehold licences for extraction of coal of approx. 224 sq. Km in Tete, province of Mozambique. In the 316th Board meeting held on 4 July 2015, on the basis of Interim Geological Report prepared by CMPDIL, a 100% planning subsidiary of CIL, board has approved to retain 54 sq. km of leashold licence area which will be of actual interest with coal bearing horizon occuring within 500 mtr depth and relinquish the remaining 170 sq. km area out of total leasehold licence area of 224 sq. Km. The announcement was made after market hours yesterday, 14 July 2015.

 

Shares of HDFC turn ex-dividend today, 15 July 2015 for final dividend of Rs 13 per share for the year ended 31 March 2015.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises will announce its April-June 2015 quarterly results today, 15 July 2015.

Meanwhile, India's weather office, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), said in its daily monsoon update issued yesterday, 14 July 2015, that the Southwest Monsoon has been active over Andaman & Nicobar Island during 24 hours ending until 8:30 IST.

For the country as a whole, cumulative rainfall during this year's monsoon season was 5% below the Long Period Average (LPA) until 14 July 2015. Region wise, the southwest monsoon was 20% above the LPA in Northwest India, 8% below the LPA in East & Northeast India, 11% below the LPA in Central India and 14% below the LPA in South Peninsula and until 14 July 2015.

The quantum of and the spatial distribution of rainfall this month holds key, with July being a crucial month for the sowing of Kharif crops. The June-September southwest monsoon is critical for the country's agriculture because a considerable part of the country's farmland is dependent on the rains for irrigation.

Key benchmark indices registered small losses after alternately moving between positive and negative zone in intraday trade yesterday, 14 July 2015. The S&P BSE Sensex fell 28.29 points or 0.1% to settle at 27,932.90, its lowest closing level since 10 July 2015.

In overseas markets, Asian stocks were mixed today, 15 July 2015. Key benchmark indices in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Taiwan fell by 0.07% to 2.35%. Key benchmark indices in Singapore, Japan, and South Korea rose by 0.29% to 0.5%.

China's economy grew an annual 7% in the second quarter, steady with the previous quarter and slightly better than forecasts, though further stimulus is still expected after the quarter ended with a stock market crash.

Monthly activity data, released alongside the GDP report, also beat expectations across the board to show signs of a rebound, with factory output hitting a five-month high. China's industrial output rose 6.8% in June. China's retail sales rose 10.6% in June.

US stocks rose yesterday, 14 July 2015, pushing the Dow industrials index back above 18,000 for the first time in three weeks.

Among economic data, retail sales unexpectedly fell 0.3% in June from the prior month, the Commerce Department said. Figures for the prior two months were also revised down.

In Europe, an International Monetary Fund study published yesterday, 14 July 2015, reportedly showed that Greece needs far more debt relief than European governments have been willing to contemplate so far, as fractious parties in Athens prepared to vote on a sweeping austerity package demanded by their lenders.

The IMF's stark warning on Greece's debt came as Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras struggled to persuade deeply unhappy leftist lawmakers to vote for a package of austerity measures and liberal economic reforms to secure a new bailout.
