Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 2345.77 crore yesterday, 26 August 2015, as per provisional data released by the stock exchanges. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 1881.08 crore yesterday, 26 August 2015, as per provisional data.
In overseas markets, Asian stocks were trading higher. The US stock market closed on a high note yesterday, 26 August 2015, with gains of nearly 4% seen in both the Dow Jones index and the S&P 500 - and even higher gains for the Nasdaq index.
Indian stocks may remain volatile today, 27 August 2015, as traders roll over positions in the futures & options (F&O) segment from the near month August 2015 series to September 2015 series. The near month August 2015 derivatives contracts are set to expire today, 27 August 2015.
At 9:18 IST, the S&P BSE Sensex was up 347.37 points or 1.35% at 26,062.03. The index rose 455.73 points at the day's high of 26,170.39 at the onset of trading session. The index gained 298.48 points at the day's low of 26,013.14 at the onset of trading session.
The CNX Nifty was up 104.75 points or 1.34% at 7,896.60. The index hit a high of 7,930.80 in intraday trade. The index hit a low of 7,883.90 in intraday trade.
The BSE Mid-Cap index was up 187.52 points or 1.79% at 10,664.68. The BSE Small-Cap index was 216.49 points or 2.02% at 10,928.22. Both these indices outperformed the Sensex.

The market breadth indicating the overall health of the market was strong. On BSE, 916 shares rose and 114 shares fell. A total of 21 shares were unchanged.
Bharti Airtel was up 2.05%. The company after market hours yesterday, 26 August 2015, announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire 100% equity stake in Augere Wireless Broadband India (Augere), which holds 20 MHz of BWA spectrum in the telecom circles of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Sun TV Network was up 0.69%. The company after market hours yesterday, 26 August 2015 said that it has partnered with HOOQ, Asia's biggest premium video-on-demand service in a multi-year deal. HOOQ has recently entered into the Indian market with over 30,000 hours of movies and TV series and will now carry Sun TV's library that includes a mix of super hit films from Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam & Kannada languages, Sun TV Network said in a statement.
NHPC was up 1.83%. The company after market hours yesterday, 26 August 2015 said that Unit 3 of Chutak Power Station has been restored on 26 August 2015.
India's weather office, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), said in a daily report issued yesterday, 26 August 2015, that for the country as a whole, cumulative rainfall during this year's monsoon season was 12% below the Long Period Average (LPA) until 26 August 2015. Region wise, the rainfall was 20% below the LPA in South Peninsula, 15% below the LPA in Central India, 6% below the LPA in East & Northeast India and 6% below the LPA in Northwest India, until 26 August 2015.
The June-September southwest monsoon is critical for the country's agriculture because a considerable part of the country's farmland is dependent on the rains for irrigation.
In overseas markets, Asian stocks were trading higher. Key benchmark indices in Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan were up by 1.07% to 2.94%.
In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite was up 1.55%. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index was up 2.55%.
The US stock market closed on a high note yesterday, 26 August 2015, with gains of nearly 4% seen in both the Dow Jones index and the S&P 500 and even higher gains for the Nasdaq index. The rally followed six days of losses for markets that have been shaken by news about China's currency and economy.
