Market trades with small losses

Key benchmark indices continued to trade with small losses in mid-morning trade. At 11:20 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 62.39 points or 0.2% at 31,150.98. The Nifty 50 index was down 22.60 points or 0.23% at 9,624.65.

After opening slightly lower, key indices hovered in the negative terrain with small losses so far during the session.

The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.14%. The decline in the index was lower than the Sensex's fall in percentage terms. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index up 0.33%, outperforming the Sensex.

The breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was positive. On the BSE, 1,146 shares rose and 1,085 shares fell. A total of 140 shares were unchanged.

 

Realty stocks were mixed. DLF (up 0.28%), Sobha (up 0.66%), Unitech (up 0.4%), Godrej Properties (up 0.56%), and Oberoi Realty (up 2.49%) edged higher. D B Realty (down 0.34%), Indiabulls Real Estate (down 0.03%), NBCC (down 0.13%), and Housing Development & Infrastructure (HDIL) (down 2.99%) declined.

Telecom stocks declined. Reliance Communications (RCom) (down 1.6%), Bharti Airtel (down 0.11%), Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) (down 0.01%) and Idea Cellular (down 0.38%) declined.

Shares of Bharti Infratel rose 0.13%. Bharti Infratel is a provider of tower and related infrastructure and is a unit of Bharti Airtel.

GPT Infraprojects rose 1.5% after the company announced that it bagged an order worth Rs 210 crore. The announcement was made during trading hours today, 9 June 2017.

GPT Infraprojects said that the order is for construction of ROB (road over bridge) and its approaches in lieu of level crossing on National Highway (NH)-60 and construction of ROB and its approaches in lieu of unmanned level crossings on NH-60 in West Bengal. The order was awarded by the Office of the Superintending Engineer, Public Works (Roads) Directorate, Government of West Bengal. The order is to be completed within 24 months.

Overseas, Asian stocks were mixed after British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative party has fallen short of an outright majority in the UK's general election. May had unexpectedly called the snap election seven weeks ago, confident of sharply increasing the slim majority she had inherited from predecessor David Cameron before launching into the Brexit talks.

US stocks notched meager gains yesterday, 8 June 2017 but the Nasdaq Composite index closed at a record after former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey's appearance in front of the US Senate Intelligence Committee concluded without any significant revelations.

Comey accused President Donald Trump of firing him to try to undermine the agency's investigation of possible collusion by Trump's campaign with Russia's alleged efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election. During more than two hours of testimony, Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee he believed Trump had directed him in February to drop an FBI probe into the Republican president's former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, as part of the broader Russia investigation.

The European Central Bank (ECB) yesterday, 8 June 2017, as expected, left interest rates unchanged but said it continued to expect interest rates to remain at present levels for an extended period of time, and well past the horizon of its asset-buying program, which is set to run at least through December. In previous statements, the ECB had said it expected rates to remain at present or lower levels for an extended period of time.
