Amid a bout of volatility, key benchmark indices declined in afternoon trade. At 13:16 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was down 51.03 points or 0.20% at 25,817.46. The Nifty 50 index was down 7.85 points or 0.10% at 7,848.70.
The market breadth indicating the overall health of the market was positive. On BSE, 1,423 shares rose and 997 shares fell. A total of 183 shares were unchanged. The BSE Mid-Cap index was up 0.61%. The BSE Small-Cap index was up 0.35%. Both these indices outperformed the Sensex.
In overseas markets, most Asian markets were trading lower. Japanese markets were closed on account of a holiday. US markets ended with gains on Friday, 20 November 2015 led by a rally in healthcare, consumer and technology stocks.
Most pharmaceutical shares edged higher. IPCA Laboratories (up 2.88%), Cadila Healthcare (up 1.82%), Strides Arcolab (up 1.78%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (up 1.67%), Aurobindo Pharma (up 1.66%), Lupin (up 1.49%), Divi's Laboratories (up 0.75%), Wockhardt (up 0.42%), Glenmark Pharmaceuticals (up 0.33%) and GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals (up 0.03%), edged higher. Piramal Enterprises (down 0.2%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (down 0.92%) and Cipla (down 1.05%), edged lower.
Most sugar stocks rose. Simbhaoli Sugars (up 4.97%), Dhampur Sugar Mills (up 4.19%), Rana Sugars (up 1.44%), Shree Renuka Sugar (up 1.42%), Empee Sugars and Chemicals (up 1.12%), DCM Shriram Industries (up 0.78%), Sakthi Sugars (up 0.66%), EID Parry (India) (up 0.62%), Triveni Engineering & Industries (up 0.42%), Upper Ganges Sugar & Industries (up 0.41%) and Balrampur Chini Mills (up 0.4%), edged higher. KCP Sugar & Industries Corporation (down 0.19%), Dwarikesh Sugar Industries (down 0.36%), Bajaj Hindusthan (down 0.51%) and Oudh Sugar Mills (down 3.31%), edged lower.
