A bout of volatility was witnessed as key benchmark indices trimmed gains after extending intraday gains in afternoon trade. At 13:15 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex was up 10.19 points or 0.04% at 25,970.22. The 50-unit Nifty 50 index was currently up 6.20 points or 0.08% at 7,902.45. The Sensex was currently trading below the psychological 26,000 mark. The index had alternately moved above and below that psychological level in intraday trade.
In overseas markets, Asian stocks were mixed. US stocks ended lower yesterday, 30 December 2015, as a drop in oil resumed, dragging down energy company shares.
Closer home, the market breadth indicating the overall health of the market was positive. On BSE, 1,302 shares rose and 1,156 shares fell. A total of 237 shares were unchanged. The BSE Mid-Cap index was currently down 0.07%, underperforming the Sensex. The BSE Small-Cap index was currently up 0.26%, outperforming the Sensex.
Metal and mining stocks were mixed. National Aluminium Company (down 1.84%), Vedanta (down 1.9%), Steel Authority of India (down 0.84%), Hindalco Industries (down 0.65%) and NMDC (down 0.17%) edged lower. Jindal Steel & Power (up 0.74%), Hindustan Zinc (up 0.55%), JSW Steel (up 0.37%) and Tata Steel (up 0.1%) edged higher.
Cement stocks were mostly higher. Ambuja Cements (up 0.32%) and Shree Cement (up 1.48%) edged higher. ACC (down 0.09%) and UltraTech Cement (down 0.34%) edged lower.
Grasim Industries was up 0.66%. Grasim has exposure to cement sector through its holding in UltraTech Cement.
