According to the data released by the Agriculture Ministry, a total area of 355 lakh hectares (lh) has been planted so far compared with 387 lh in the same period of the previous rabi season, media reported stated. This accounts for a decline of around 8.30% over the year. Commodity wise data shows that the area under coarse cereals was down sharply by 27% at 29.64 lh with Jowar witnessing a decline of 33%. The acreage under pulses also fell by 12.40% at 102 lh with the primary pulses crop Chana witnessing a massive drop of 15.10% in acreage at 70.46 lh. The area under oilseeds was up marginally by 0.38% at 63.14 lh. Wheat acreage was down 2.42% at 153 lh while the area under Rice slipped by 30.27% at 7.33 lh.
