Indian Railways have achieved the revenue as well as freight loading targets for FY2014. In the Interim Railway Budget 2014-15, presented in the Parliament on 13 February 2014, Indian Railways had revised the revenue target to Rs 140450 crore for FY2014 from Rs 143692 crore earlier. Railway has recorded healthy 12.5% growth in the revenue, while breaching the target at Rs 140485.02 crore for FY2014.Railways have sharply exceeded the upwardly revised freight revenue target at Rs 94925.02 crore, recording 10.6% growth over FY2013. Meanwhile, the passenger revenue posted 17.5% growth touching the target of Rs 37478.03 crore. However, the other revenue was short of target at Rs 8081.97 crore, but the segment still managed to record healthy growth of 14.1% for FY2014.
Indian railways have hauled a freight loading of 1053.54 million tonnes (mt) in FY2014, which is higher than the target of 1052 mt revised up wards from 1047 mt earlier. The freight loading of Indian Railways was also higher than 1009.83 for FY2013, registering an increase of 4.3% in FY2014 up from 4.1% growth in FY2013.
The freight loading of the railway increased 2.2% to touch a milestone figure of 100.49 mt in March 2014. For the first time, Railways have crossed the monthly freight loading of 100 mt in March 2014.

The revenue of Indian Railways (IR) increased 12.6%, on yoy basis, to Rs 14307.3 crore in March 2014. The goods revenue, accounting for 64% of the total revenue, increased 9.1% to Rs 9179.99 crore, while the passenger revenue jumped 24.8% to Rs 3756.93 crore in March 2014 over March 2013. The revenue from other sources also moved up 6.8% to Rs 1370.38 crore in March 2014. Among the other sources of revenue, the revenue from other coaching increased 17.6% to Rs 338.86 crore, while the sundry revenue improved 3.6% to Rs 1031.52 crore in March 2014.
Passenger Traffic
The total approximate number of passengers booked rebounded 2.2% to 727.57 million in March 2014, snapping consistent decline for last five sequential months. The surge in passenger traffic in March 2014 has mainly supported the strong growth in passenger revenue for the month.
During FY2014, the total passenger traffic has declined 0.8% to 8535.0 million, which is consistently growing for last many years together. The decline in passenger traffic was mainly caused by 3.5% dip in the non-suburban traffic to 3985.15 million, while suburban traffic has moved up 1.7% to 4549.85 million in FY2014.
