Shares trade firmly higher

The market was trading on a firm note in morning trade. At 10:20 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 184.33 points or 0.53% at 35,154.03. The Nifty 50 index was up 47.35 points or 0.44% at 10,739.65. The Sensex was trading above the psychologically important 35,000 mark after opening above that level. Positive cues from other Asian stocks boosted investors' sentiment. FMCG shares were in demand.

Among secondary barometers, the BSE Mid-Cap index was up 0.34%, underperforming the Sensex. The BSE Small-Cap index was up 0.67%, outperforming the Sensex.

The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was positive. On BSE, 1,272 shares rose and 746 shares fell. A total of 115 shares were unchanged.

 

Most metal shares declined. National Aluminium Company (down 1.23%), Steel Authority of India (down 1.03%), Jindal Steel & Power (down 0.85%), Hindalco Industries (down 0.83%), Hindustan Copper (down 0.61%), JSW Steel (down 0.53%) and Tata Steel (down 0.34%), edged lower. Vedanta (up 0.07%), NMDC (up 0.36%) and Hindustan Zinc (up 0.87%), edged higher.

FMCG shares were in demand. Bajaj Corp (up 4.34%), Nestle India (up 1.26%), Britannia Industries (up 0.95%), Marico (up 0.95%), Procter & Gamble Hygiene & Health Care (up 0.83%), Jyothy Laboratories (up 0.76%), Tata Global Beverages (up 0.74%), Dabur India (up 0.67%), Godrej Consumer Products (up 0.58%), GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (up 0.48%), Hindustan Unilever (up 0.36%) and Colgate Palmolive (India) (up 0.24%), edged higher.

Overseas, Asian stocks edged higher as investors focused on a mix of ebbing geopolitical tensions, robust earnings and economic data. US stock benchmarks closed out little changed on Friday, 27 April 2018, as investors expressed muted enthusiasm following strong corporate results.
