Transfer of a portion of land and building of erstwhile National Instruments by Jadavpur University to DRDO for defence research centre

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, gave its approval for transfer of a portion of land and building of erstwhile National Instruments by Jadavpur University, West Bengal to the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) on long term lease. The land will be transferred for establishment of a defence research centre namely the Jagadish Chandra Bose Centre for Advanced Technology (JCBCAT).

Transfer of a portion of the land and building of the erstwhile National Instruments Limited to DRDO for establishment of a defence research centre, will be beneficial as Research and Development efforts are expected to result in reduction in import dependence in the strategic sector.

 

Background:

The National Instruments Limited Jadavpur University was a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the administrative control of the Department of Heavy Industry. As it became sick, its assets, liabilities and manpower were transferred to Jadavpur University with effect from 1.1.2009 under the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR) sanctioned revival scheme (SRS). According to Section 7B of the SRS, the land of National Instruments Limited transferred to Jadavpur University will be used for research, project works, pilot plant study and the land will not be alienated, sold, leased, transferred without approval of Government of lndia (Gol) and subject to such terms and conditions as may be decided by Gol. Further, the assets transferred to National Instruments Limited will be put to use only for the purpose of research, pilot projects etc.
