Eleven CRPF troopers were killed and seven others injured when Maoists ambushed a road-opening party in Chattisgarh's Sukma district on Monday, an official said.
The personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) 74th Battalion were attacked in a forested area in Kala Pathar near Chintagufa area around 12.30 p.m. and retaliated to the firing by the insurgents.
"Our 11 men were killed while seven others were injured in the fierce gun battle with Maoists. The injured are being evacuated by helicopter," CRPF Deputy Inspector General M. Dinakaran told IANS.
He said that the 99-member contingent was moving towards Chintagufa from Burkapal area when Maoists, lying in ambush, opened indiscriminate fire and also lobbed hand grenades.
At least 12 CRPF men were killed in a similar Maoist attack in Sukma early this year.
