At least 11 people were killed and 27 others were missing Tuesday after heavy rains caused landslides in China's Chongqing province.

According to officials, about 898,000 people in 16 counties in the region have been affected and 39,000 have been evacuated from flooded areas, Xinhua reported.

The region has suffered direct economic losses of around 710 million yuan ($115 million), the officials added.

Rescue teams, including firefighters and police, have evacuated over 7,000 residents to safe locations.

The missing include 11 coal miners in Yunyang county who were buried due to a landslide Monday.

Heavy rains started in Yunyang, Wuxi, Fengjie and Wushan in Chongqing since Sunday, disrupting traffic and cutting off power supply and communication lines.
