11 sentenced to death for killing Bangladeshi leader

A Bangladesh court on Monday sentenced 11 people to death for the murder of a leader of Jubo League, the youth front of the ruling Awami League.

Additional District and Sessions judge Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan announced the verdict, Xinhua news agency reported. Among them, six are in jail and five are on the run.

Most of the accused reportedly belonged to former premier Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its affiliated bodies in Gazipur on the outskirts of Dhaka.

According to the case file, Jalaluddin Sarkar, ex-president of Awami Juba League's Kapasia unit in Gazipur, was hacked to death on August 17, 2003.

 

The convicts can appeal against the death penalty in the high court within seven days.
