At least 14 people suspected of being linked to the Islamic State (IS) have been arrested in Malaysia, it was reported on Saturday.

They were arrested between May 17 and 20 across the country following the arrest of 15 suspects in March, Xinhua news agency quoted police as saying.

At least eight were suspected of being involved in channelling funds to the IS militants and Abu Sayyaf terrorists in southern Philippines.

They were believed to be linked to a Malaysian joining the IS in Syria. He is actively recruiting new militants and threatened to kill top officials including the prime minister.

Others were arrested for promoting IS ideology or planning to join the IS in Syria.

Malaysian authorities estimated that dozens of Malaysians had joined the IS in the West Asia.
