At least 16 members of the Moroccan Royal Guard, who accompany the monarch, were killed and 42 others wounded in a traffic accident Saturday, officials said.
The accident took place around 4 a.m. between the coastal towns of Tetouan and Al Hoceima, when a bus carrying the guards veered off due to high speed and then overturned, Xinhua reported.
The official MAP news agency said the driver lost control of the bus in a zig-zag turn and the vehicle fell into a 200-metre- deep valley.
The bus was part of a convoy travelling to Al Hoceima to prepare for a visit of King Mohammed VI to the region in the coming days.
