Iran's border police have seized 2.5 tonnes of drugs in operations along the country's boundary in Sistan and Baluchestan province, the Fars news agency reported.

The narcotics, among them opium and hashish, were seized from drug traffickers in two separate operations, Xinhua quoted border police commander of Sistan and Baluchestan Gholam-Nabi Kouhkan as saying.

The police commander did not mention the time of the seizure.

Last week, Iran's drug combat squads seized more than 1.7 tonnes of drugs in the central province of Yazd.

Earlier this month, Iran hanged to death six men in a prison in Bam city in southern Kerman province on charges of smuggling 530 kg of narcotics.

In June, 100 tonnes of illicit drugs were burnt in Iran on the occasion of the UN International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
