Twenty-six malnourished stray dogs that were confined to a house in the capital were rescued by Delhi Police, officials said Monday.
Police registered a case and launched a hunt to nab the house owner, identified as Gokul Nair.
The 32-year-old Nair, who is unemployed, had a habit of keeping stray dogs, police said.
A neighbour informed a non-governmental organisation, and a raid was conducted by police at Nair's house in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj area Sunday night.
Neighbours complained of continuous barking and stink coming from the house. All the dogs were malnourished.
A neighbour told police Nair was involved in this activity for the past two years. His father lives in Kerala.
The dogs were taken to the Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre in west Delhi. They were now under observation of veterinary doctors, police said.
