At least 36 people were killed and 79 others injured Friday after two buses collided head-on in Tanzania, police said.

The accident took place in the east African nation's lake zone regions of Mwanza and Mara, Xinhua quoted Mara's police chief Ferdinand Mtui as saying. "This is one of the grisly road accidents to happen in this part of Tanzania," the officer said.

According to police, 36 people died on the spot and dozens severely injured were rushed to a hospital in Musoma for treatment.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident, though earlier investigation show that the driver of one of the buses involved in the accident was trying to overtake another vehicle in an area which is very close to a narrow bridge.

"But it was too late for the driver to do what he wanted to do," an eyewitnesses said, heaping blame on reckless driving.
