Manpreet Singh from Moga in Punjab and Mukesh Kumar from a village near Kharkhoda in Sonipat town of Haryana, who have been arrested for smuggling sandalwood, were on Thursday remanded to four day's police custody by a court here.

The crime branch of Gurgaon police had seized 250 logs of red sandalwood worth over Rs.2 crore from a truck, and arrested the duo.

The Crime Branch team, acting on a tip-off, stopped a truck heading towards Delhi on Gurgaon-Delhi Expressway, near 32 Milestone and recovered the sandalwood being smuggled.

Manpreet Singh and Mukesh Kumar told the police that they smuggled sandalwood with the help of Prahlad and Randhir, residents of Sidhrawali in Gurgaon and Pawan from Tamil Nadu.

"The truck was supposed to reach Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar in Delhi. The accused did not know from where the sandalwood was loaded," Crime Branch chief Shyam Sundar told IANS.

Both were delivering such a consignment for the first time.
