A fourth person has died as five others still remain critical after a motorist on Friday intentionally ploughed into a crowd in Melbourne, a media report said on Saturday .

A 33-year-old man died in hospital late on Friday night after a minor girl and two others died on the scene after Dimitrious Gargasoulas drove his car into the pedestrian-only section of the shopping mall at the central business district here.

Police confirmed that Gargasoulas, 26, was shot in the arm before he was arrested on Bourke Street. He is yet to be quizzed by the police as he also is in hospital.

Graham Ashton, chief commissioner of Victoria Police, confirmed that Gargasoulas was out on bail after being charged with family violence related offences.

Police alleged that Gargasoulas stabbed his brother on Friday morning before stealing the car that he used to mow down his victims.

More than 30 people were injured in the incident.
