The government has identified 44 Economic Corridors of an aggregate length of 26,200 km for development or improvement under the Bharatmala Pariyojna, parliament was informed on Thursday.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Road, Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan said that 9,000 km of Economic Corridors is proposed to be developed under the first phase of the project.
These corridors carry high volume of traffic.
Bharatmala is a name given to an ambitious road and highways project of the Narendra Modi government.
"NHAI has awarded or is in the process of awarding thirty consultancy packages for preparation of Detailed Project Report of about 9,300 km roads included in Bharatmala Pariyojana comprising Economic Corridors, Inter Corridor, Feeder Routes, International Connectivity and Coastal Roads," said Radhakrishnan.
