An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit the Lakshadweep Sea region on Wednesday, the weather office said.
However, there were no immediate reports of loss of lives or property.
"The quake hit the Lakshadweep Sea around 4.01 a.m. at a depth of 10 km," an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.
"The epicentre of the earthquake was at latitude 5.8 degree north and longitude 76 degree east," he added.
