6 magnitude quake hits Japan, no tsunami warning

An earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter Scale hit the northeast coast of Japan on Saturday but no tsunami warning was issued, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The quake with epicentre at Sanriku offshore Miyagi prefecture jolted the country at 6.01 p.m. (local time), Xinhua news agency reported.

Miyagi prefecture borders the Pacific Ocean.

The earthquake logged three on the Japanese seismic intensity scale which peaks at seven in part of Iwate prefecture, and could also be felt in the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori, Miyagi, Akita and Yamagata.

So far no major damage or injuries have been reported.
