The Emmys: Jim Parsons wins for Big Bang Theory, Benedict Cumberbatch for Sherlock

Modern Family received trophies for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony kicked off at 5 pm Monday in downtown Los Angeles but there were few surprises.

Modern Family received three big statuettes: In addition to the top comedy award , Ty Burrell went home with the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series award for his role of Phil Dunphy in Modern Family, while Gail Mancuso bagged Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series award.
 
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series went to Allison Janney for Mom.
 
Jim Parsons, who shot to stardom as eccentric genius Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory, went home with Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series award for the sitcom. Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series was bagged by Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who was also one of the presenters of the evening.
 
 
Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series went to Louis C K for So Did The Fat Lady.
 
Jimmy Fallon, who took over from Jay Leno as host of The Tonight Show  and was one of the presenters, won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.
 
Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series went to Uzo Aduba, who plays Suzanne 'Crazy Eyes' Warren, in Orange Is The New Black.
 
Benedict Cumberbatch and Jessica Lange won for their outstanding performances as the leads in Sherlock: His Last Vow and American Horror Story: Coven respectively.
 
The Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Mini-series or Movie was bagged by Kathy Bates for her role as Madame Delphine LaLaurie in American Horror.
 
Martin Freeman walked away with the Outstanding Supporting Actor title for Sherlock: His Last Vow, which also won the Outstanding Writing for a mini-series, movie or a dramatic special for Steven Moffat.
 
In the Outstanding Directing for a Mini-series, Movie or a Dramatic Special category, Colin Bucksey received the trophy for Fargo.
 
Fargo, was also named best mini-series and The Normal Heart, based on a play of the same name, got the award for outstanding television movie.

Breaking Bad took home the best drama trophy, while Bryan Cranston picked up his fourth lead-actor Emmy for playing teacher-turned-drug kingpin Walter White. Aaron Paul garnered his third supporting-actor award, co-star Anna Gunn became a two-time winner, and the show was also honoured with a writing award. 

Julianna Margulies won outstanding lead actress in a drama for her performance in The Good Wife. She won in 2010 and has been nominated each year since. 
 
The Amazing Race won the Outstanding Reality-Competition Programme trophy.
 
Jane Lynch, who won a 2010 Primetime Emmy for Glee, bagged the Outstanding Host trophy for a Reality or Reality-Competition Programme award for Hollywood Game Night.
 
Shark Tank, which features aspiring entrepreneurs making business presentations to a panel of potential investors, received Outstanding Structured Reality Programme award Monday night.
 
Outstanding Unstructured Reality Programme award went to Deadliest Catch. It portrays the real-life events aboard fishing vessels.
 
The Colbert Report, which features political humorist Stephen Colbert's unique satirical take on the big issues of the US, won the Outstanding Variety Series.
 
The show was also awarded for outstanding writing.
 
Sarah Silverman walked away with the award for Outstanding Writing for a variety special for Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles, while the Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special honour went to Glenn Weiss for the 67th Annual Tony Awards.
 
In the Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series category, Don Roy King won for his work on Saturday Night Live, hosted by Jimmy Fallon.
 
The Outstanding Variety Special trophy was given to the team behind AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute To Mel Brooks.
 
The Emmys will also see Billy Crystal, a legendary actor, pay tribute to his longtime friend Robin Williams who died August 11, during the In Memoriam segment of the show.

The ceremony is on-going in Nokia Theatre LA LIVE in downtown Los Angeles.
 
Broadcast in more than 150 countries around the globe, the show is expected to attract some 600,000,000 viewers.
