Abu Dhabi, June 1 (IANS/WAM) Eighty-three per cent of the new Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway has been completed, while work to launch the project by the end of this year is progressing.

The execution of the new highway has followed a detailed study of the conditions and volume of daily traffic between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, general services firm Musanada said.

The four-lane highway will have a capacity of 8,000 vehicles per hour, i.e. 2,000 vehicles per lane.

Functioning as an alternative route to the existing E11 Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway, the new motorway will form a strategic link that will provide additional capacity to traffic movement, particularly during peak hours.

The total cost of the 62-km highway project is approximately 2.1 billion Abu Dhabi dirham (about $570 million).

"This road project will provide a new link to Abu Dhabi city, toward the international airport and Yas and Saadiyat islands. It will help improve traffic flow between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, easing traffic congestion and reducing the accident rates," said Hamdan Al Marzouei, Musanada's Acting Roads Director.

The project will also include six interchanges, including the Kizad Interchange, and six underground passes.
