Leading power and automation technology major ABB Ltd bagged orders valued at Rs.310 crore from the state-run Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (Powergrid) to supply transformers and shunt reactors to strengthen the high voltage transmission grid.
"The orders were booked in fourth quarter of 2013 and first quarter to supply power transformers and shunt reactors for sub-stations being built to support voltage transmission grid development," the Indian subsidiary of the Swiss power major said in a statement here Thursday.
The company will install 14 high voltage single-phase autotransformers of 500 megavolt ampere and 765 kilovolt at greenfield sub-stations being built at Kanpur and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
The sub-stations will receive power from the neighbouring states of Jharkhand and West Bengal and distribute it across Uttar Pradesh to meet growing demand in the northern region.
"The transformers and shunt reactors will enhance grid reliability and ensure efficiency with reduced life-cycle costs. They will also strengthen the country's transmission infrastructure and improve power reliability," ABB's power products division Bernhard Jucker said in the statement.
As an integral component of a power grid, transformers are essential for efficient and safe conversion of electricity between diverse voltage systems.
As one of the largest transmission utilities the world over, Powergrid owns and operates over 100,000 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and 178 sub-stations across the country.
