An exit poll predicted the Liberal Party-led coalition is heading for a landslide victory in the Australian federal election Saturday and leader Tony Abbott will become prime minister of the country.

The Sky News/Newspoll exit poll showed the coalition would gain 25 more seats to a total of 97 seats in the House of Representatives while Labor is expected to lose 21 seats.

Almost every opinion poll before the polling day indicated that the Liberal-National coalition would achieve a big win, reported Xinhua.

The latest Newspoll conducted for The Australian newspaper predicts Abbott is on course for a win with a 40-seat majority over his rival, Labor leader and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

The poll published in The Australian newspaper Saturday showed the coalition with 46 percent primary vote support compared to Labor's 33 percent, the Australian Greens' nine percent and others' 12 percent.
