Mexico City, Dec 18 (IANS/EFE) Police in the central Mexican state of Morelos rescued a lawmaker hours after he was abducted by members of a drug cartel, Governor Graco Ramirez said Thursday.
"Legislator David Martinez has been rescued," the governor said on Twitter.
Martinez, a member of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), was beaten and subjected to psychological torture by his captors, an official said.
The rescue operation led to the capture of eight members of the Guerreros Unidos, an outfit active in southern and central Mexico that has been linked to the Sep 26 disappearance of 43 students in Guerrero state.
Police are still searching for "several other cartel bosses" in connection with Martinez's kidnapping, the official said.
