AIIMS doctor sent to custody for wife's suicide

A court here on Monday sent a doctor of AIIMS to a 14-day judicial custody following the suicide of his wife after she came to know that he was gay.

Kamal Vedi, 34, a dermatologist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here, was remanded in judicial custody till May 4 by a magistrate here.

A 31-year-old senior anaesthetist at AIIMS, Priya Vedi allegedly committed suicide by slitting her wrist with a sharp-edged object in a hotel room in central Delhi's Paharganj locality.

Before taking the extreme step, Priya Vedi wrote a note on her Facebook account and also left a suicide note alleging that her husband was gay and used to torture her.

 

Police arrested Kamal on Sunday and booked him under Sections 498A (cruelty) and 304B (dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code.

Police said that Priya's husband had filed a missing complaint on Saturday evening when he failed to contact her on her mobile since morning.

The couple got married five years ago and since then they were staying at the AIIMS staff quarters in south Delhi, according to police.

Police learnt about Priya Vedi's death during a search operation across several hotels in Paharganj.

The police team also found a suicide note from her room, in which she mentioned her troubled marriage that consequently led to her committing suicide.
