A British national held hostage by the Al Qaeda in Yemen has been released, the foreign office announced on Sunday.

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said the Briton had been freed by forces from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), BBC reported.

"We are very grateful for the assistance of the UAE," Hammond said.

The hostage, reportedly held since February 2014, is now "safe and well" and receiving support from British officials.

"I'm so pleased for the family of the British hostage in Yemen who has been released safe and well," Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted.
