Amid the high-pitch electioneering for the February 18 assembly elections, Tripura Police arrested a tribal man with three sophisticated revolvers and a large quantity of ammunition, police said here on Thursday.
"A tribal man, Naresh Chakma, 48, was arrested by police from the Agartala Railway Station late on Wednesday night. Three sophisticated revolvers, 500 rounds of ammunition and three knives were recovered from him," West Tripura district police chief Abhijit Saptarshi said.
He said that Naresh had a criminal record with a similar case registered against him in Assam.
"It is suspected that he was planning to smuggle the arms to neighbouring Bangladesh," Saptarshi added.
Naresh was handed over to the Government Railway Police for further legal action. A case under the Arms Act would be registered against him.
Following the Election Commission's instructions, senior police officials accompanied by central paramilitary forces have been conducting raids at various places across the state.
