Actress Angelina Jolie opted for a double mastectomy to reduce her risk of getting breast cancer and her partner Brad Pitt hails her decision calling it a "heroic step".
"Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie's choice, as well as many others like her, absolutely heroic. I thank our medical team for their care and focus," people.com quoted Pitt as saying.
"All I want is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children," he added.
Jolie, 37, had to go for the surgery because genetic tests showed she had a high risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Her doctors estimated that she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer.
She lost her 56-year-old mother Marcheline Bertrand in 2007 due to ovarian cancer.
