Fashion icon and editor-in-chief of American Vogue Anna Wintour has expressed her dislike of celebrities being paid to wear unadventurous dresses on the red carpet.

'The red carpet, in the United States, has become too much of a business. It's a fact that celebrities are paid to wear everything, and to me that sometimes comes across as very manufactured and not individual," contactmusic.com quoted her as saying.

The 64-year-old wishes stars would step out of their comfort zones instead of playing it safe with their gown choices.

Wintour said: "(Celebrities) have all these teams of people telling them what to do, what to wear, how to do their hair, make-up.

"And they're so scared of being criticised, whereas, you know, what's wrong with looking different? How many mermaid fishtail strapless sequin (gowns) can we see?''
