The Madras High Court on Friday ordered the Tamil Nadu government to appoint a Vigilance Commissioner with independent charge to head the State Vigilance Commission to oversee the probe into the gutka scam while upholding the appointment of state police chief T.K.Rajendran.
Deciding on the petition filed by a trade union leader challenging the appointment of Rajendran, the court said the appointment is as per procedure.
The court also declined to order a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the gutka scam wherein top police officials were alleged to have been bribed to allow the sale of banned item in Chennai, but told the state government to appoint a Vigilance Commissioner to monitor the investigation.
