A 48-hour ceasefire by the Saudi-led military coalition fighting against Houthi rebels began on Saturday in Yemen.

The cessation of hostilities came into force at 12 p.m., and will be extended if the rebels and their allies commit themselves to respecting it and allow humanitarian aid organisations to bring aid to the inhabitants in conflict areas, Efe news reported.

The Houthi rebels and forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh agreed on Wednesday to a ceasefire announced a day earlier by United States Secretary of State John Kerry, which should have come into force Thursday.
