The government on Wednesday asserted in the Lok Sabha that the Armed Forces are "apolitical".

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members Manoj Rajoria and Raghav Lakhanpal had asked in a written question whether the government was aware of any attempts of politicisation of the armed forces.

The MPs also asked if the government has any policy on the issue, and what are the measures being taken.

In a one line reply, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said: "Armed Forces in India are apolitical."

The question was asked weeks after Army chief General Bipin Rawat attributed the rise of Assam-based political party AIUDF to illegal immigration from Bangladesh, sparking a row. The party hit back, saying the Army chief's remarks were "political" and "uncalled for".
