Armed with axes, robbers on Wednesday stole more than $5 million worth of jewellery from a shop at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, police said.

Three suspects have been arrested by the police for the armed robbery. The Paris police announced the information on its official Twitter, adding that two other suspects are still on the run.

During the robbery, the gang of five smashed the window of a jewellery store at the hotel with axes and looted the pieces on display, Xinhua reported.

The loot is estimated to be worth more than $5.38 million. It remains unclear if any of the jewellery has been recovered.

Three men were arrested as the robbery was interrupted by police officers on patrol, while the other two escaped on a scooter, police said.

The five-star Ritz Hotel is located in Place Vendôme, in Paris' historical first district on the right bank of the river Seine. Interestingly, the ministry of justice is adjacent to it.

According to BBC, the hotel includes a gallery shopping area near its rear entrance, which it says hosts five shops and 95 "showcases", selling jewellery, watches and luxury clothing.
