A principal secretary of the Delhi government and his personal assistant were on Wednesday formally arrested by the CBI for taking a Rs.2.2 lakh bribe from a man who arranges security guards and peons.

Sanjay Pratap Singh, an Indian Administrative Service officer of the 1984 batch, who is serving with the Delhi government as the principal secretary in the department for welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and minorities, was detained on Tuesday along with his assistant Ramesh Kumar for accepting the bribe from a complainant.

A CBI official said the officer and his aide were arrested on Wednesday.

"They were presented before the court of Special CBI Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna, who sent them to one-day police custody," the official said.

It was alleged that the two people allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs.2.2 lakh from the contractor whose firm is providing security guards and peons to the welfare department.

According to the CBI, following registration of the case, the probe agency laid a trap and the personal assistant was caught while accepting the bribe of Rs.2.2 lakh from the complainant, on behalf of the IAS officer who had asked his assistant to deliver the money to his car.

"The assistant delivered the money to his car, which was intercepted by the CBI outside his office and the officer was nabbed with the bribe amount," said a CBI official.

"Following the arrest, searches were conducted at four premises of the accused official's home and office in Delhi. This led to the recovery of documents relating to investments made by him and his wife in eight properties worth crores in NCR, including three properties at Noida, two each at Greater Noida and Gurgaon, and one at Safdurjung Enclave in the capital," the official added.

He said other documents showing investments in bank accounts, fixed deposits and PPF accounts were also recovered.
