Star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (6/81) triggered a collapse to bundle out New Zealand for a paltry 299 in their first innings in response to India's 557/5 declared in the third and final Test at the Holkar stadium here on Monday.
Ashwin not only shone with the cherry taking six wickets but also effected two brilliant run outs to leave the visitors trailing by 258 runs.
Already on the backfoot after losing the series 0-2, the Kiwis got off to a good start from openers Martin Guptill (72) and Tom Latham (52) and middle order batsman James Neesham (71), but Ashwin and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (2/80) turned it around for the hosts.
Despite being in a position to enforce the follow-on, India skipper Virat Kohli has decided to bat for a second time in the match.
