Taking care to avoid getting caught on CCTV cameras, unidentified criminals broke into an ATM of the Punjab National Bank (PNB) here and fled with cash amounting to over Rs.14 lakh, police said Tuesday.

The incident came to light on Tuesday morning when the security guard came to open the Mohan Nagar branch and found the ATM damaged. He informed the branch manager who lodged a police complaint.

In his complaint, bank manager Harjeet Singh Rekhi said the security guard who arrived a little earlier found the shutter of the ATM chamber broken, the room ransacked and the CCTV cameras completely smashed. It was found that the robbers had taken Rs.14.18 lakh.

Inspector Sahibabad Upendra Yadav said when police inspected the site, they found that although the CCTv cameras were not operational the robbers had been careful enough to crawl inside the chamber to avoid getting identified.

"We have registered a case, a forensic team has taken the finger prints and the bank has been asked to ensure the proper operation of the CCTV cameras," he added.
