Australia finished the first day of the first Ashes Test against England at 273/8 at the Gabba here Thursday.
Skipper Michael Clarke won the toss and elected to bat but Australia struggled early, slipping to 132/6 before half centuries by Brad Haddin (78 not out) and Mitch Johnson (64) steadied the ship. David Warner also chipped in with 49 and was looking good until spooning one to short cover, while Steve Smith contributed 31.
At stumps, Ryan Harris was unbeaten on 4 with Haddin.
Pacer Stuart Broad was the major wicket-taker for England, snaring 5-65 while James Anderson collected two wickets.
