An Australian family which went missing at a popular Japanese ski field has been found alive and well on Tuesday, officials said.

Police and rescuers on snowmobiles set out on Tuesday morning and located the family about an hour and a half later, an official at the Nagano prefectural government told the Guardian.

A police official said the family was being taken by ambulance to a hospital.

The woman in her 50s and her three sons, believed to be aged between 10 and their 20s, had failed to return after skiing or snowboarding away from marked trails on Mount Kenashi, media reports said.

They were unable to descend from the 1,649 metre high mountain, where snow up to 1.32 metres thick fell by Monday night, with temperatures dropping as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius.
