Australian far-right leader Pauline Hanson on Thursday wore a burqa to the Senate in behalf of her One Nation party's efforts to ban the garment in the country, the media reported.

In a statement, Hanson said "the need to ban full face coverings in public was an important issue facing modern Australia".

Attorney-General George Brandis condemned Hanson's stunt and "counselled and cautioned" her against causing offence to religious groups, reports the BBC.

Brandis received a standing applause from opposition parties.

"No, Senator Hanson, we will not ban the burqa," he said.

Hanson's motion to ban the burqa will be debated in the Senate later on Thursday.
