Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has urged the US to support Moscow's call to set up a humanitarian mission in Ukraine.

In a telephone call to US Secretary of State John Kerry, Lavrov Saturday called for urgent measures to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in southeastern Ukraine, Xinhua reported.

According to the Russian foreign ministry, Kerry assured Lavrov that the US was working on the issue with Ukraine.

During an urgent UN Security Council meeting Tuesday, Russia and the UN called for humanitarian aid corridors to be established in conflict-hit eastern Ukrainian regions.

However, Ukraine's acting permanent representative to the UN, Aleksandr Pavlichenko, said: "There is no humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and the situation is manageable."

Ukraine rejected the Russian initiative Friday.
