Badminton: Momota, Ratchanok emerge champs in India Open

Japan's rising star shuttler Kento Momota and Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon emerged winners in the finals of the $300,000 India Open Superseries here on Sunday.

Second seed Momota, 21, moved past Danish fifth seed and 22-year-old Viktor Axelsen 21-15, 21-18 in 45 minutes to extend his superior head-to-head record to 6-2.

In the women's singles final, former world champion Ratchanok got the better of Olympic champion Li Xuerui from China 21-17, 21-18 in 43 minutes.

With this win at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, world No.5 Ratchanok bettered her head-to-head record to 5-7 against the world No.2 and double World Championship silver medallist Xuerui.

 

Moreover, it was Ratchanok's second India Open title. The first title came in 2013 when she defeated India's P.V. Sindhu in the final.

In the men's doubles final, Indonesia's Markus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo prevailed over compatriots Angga Pratama and Ricky Karanda Suwardi 21-17, 21-13 in 30 minutes.

The women's doubles title went to Japan's Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi, who battled past compatriots Naoko Fukuman and Kurumi Yonao 21-18, 21-18 in 57 minutes.

China's Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong won the mixed doubles title beating Indonesian pair of Riky Widianto and Puspita Richi Dili 21-13, 21-16 in 40 minutes.
