Two BSF troopers and a Bangladeshi smuggler were injured on Thursday when a gang of smugglers attacked a BSF patrol party along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday near the Govindpur border outpost.

"Around 30 Bangladeshi smugglers armed with sharp-edged weapons attacked our patrol party and tried to snatch away the troopers' guns.

"Sensing imminent danger to life and government property, a constable fired one round of non-lethal weapon in self-defence due to which one smuggler sustained splinter injuries," a BSF officer said.

The smuggler -- identified as Arif Hussain, a resident of Satkhira district of Bangladesh -- was handed over to police after being treated for his injuries.

"Two of our constables sustained injuries in the attack," the official said.

In another incident near Tarali border outpost in the same district, the BSF seized 25 kg of silver while it was being smuggled to Bangladesh. No smuggler could be arrested in this case.
