Alghero (Italy), Jan 9 (IANS/AKI) Violent clashes broke out between Bangladeshis and Moroccans, most of whom were minors, staying at an asylum centre in Italy's Sardinia island, police said on Monday.
Four people required medical treatment for injuries after being attacked with clubs and forks and lashed with belts during the clashes on Sunday at the Vel Mari di Fertilia centre in Alghero.
The clashes were sparked by personal animosity rather than anger over conditions at the asylum-centre, which is considered a model one, officials said.
Six out of nine residents involved in the fighting were minors and prosecutors from the juvenile court in Sassari are probing the incident.
Cultural mediators at the centre managed to help staff restore order before calling police, local daily La Nuova Sardegna reported.
